The Atlantic Challenge

This GrassRoots project involves curriculum links to Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Technology and English/French Language Arts. Students with the use of a Rowing Machine "Concept 2" simulated rowing from St. John's Newfoundland to Vannes France. Students studied the sport of rowing and utilized a "Concept 2" rowing machine to physically log the meters required to make the journey between the two countries. The students charted their way across the Atlantic via the school website and logged their session rows in Microsoft Excel. Students produced projects along the course for science on ecosystems, earth's crust, and environmental issues. Projects were also produced for Social Studies on cultural comparisons of Vannes, France and St. John's, Newfoundland, and the history of attempted and successful crossings of the Atlantic. Projects covering Math included logging and conversion of distances, money conversions, graphing and diagrams - showing whale migration routes, locations of ship wrecks, etc. All these projects were presented using a variety of medias selected by the students that included Digital video production, PowerPoint, Desktop publishing and Microsoft Word and Excel.

The lead teachers in this project were Rose Theriault, Sylvie Arseneau, David Logan and LeRoy Vincent
